The Hyatt Student Prize 2013

Leaders of Tomorrow

The Hyatt Student Prize is a well respected educational award in the hospitality industry that was launched by Hyatt Hotels & Resorts in 2008. "Our goal is to reward the most talented student in our industry, to provide him/her with an opportunity to meet Hyatt executives and to discover the management style we put into practice" (John Wallis, Global Head Marketing & Brand Strategy Hyatt).

For the Hyatt Prize 2013 a total of eighteen universities specializing in hospitality worldwide were invited to join the competition. Each university nominated one student for the contest. I had the honor to be the representative for the IUBH this year. In the preliminary stages, the Hyatt Jury, with Mr. Carlo d'Asaro Biondo (Google CEO) as president, made a first pre-selection of candidates. Selection criteria were the curriculum vitae of the student, various questions about motivation and a video presentation of the candidate. Eight out of the eighteen candidates were invited to join the Hyatt Student Prize Event in Paris in December - fortunately I also received my "entrance ticket".

At the Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme Hotel I had to prove, during one long day, my knowledge and talent in interviews and group assignments with the continuous accompaniment of a camera team in front of a huge jury. The nomination of the three finalists was presented during the fantastic competition gala dinner in the Venôme Hotel afterwards on the same evening. The day was crowned with success as I was awarded 3rd prize. The winner was Elena Vazquez from Spain at the Centro Superior de Hosteleria de Galcia. Claire Plessier form France ESSEC come in second place. Included in my prize is the opportunity to spend one week with various general managers of Hyatt properties in Paris and one week complimentary accommodation at Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme.

I am very proud and thankful that the university provided me with their confidence and boundless support during the competition. It was an extraordinary career step, but also a wonderful personal experience. This competition will always hold fond memories for me.
