An IUBH Alumnus reports

During my studies, I was already preoccupied with thinking about my professional future. That's why I realized early on that I wanted to focus on a management trainee programme in the area of the rooms division, where you take care of all guest needs from reception to housekeeping. I sent out my first applications early because many of these programmes have a multi-stage selection process. As a result, I had already secured the position as Rooms Division Management Trainee at Steigenberger before I even started my bachelor's thesis.

After completing a management trainee programme, IUBH alumnus Tobias Schweizer is now working as a duty manager at Hotel Frankfurter Hof and is part of Steigenberger's Young Potential Programme.

„Thanks to small classes the learning atmosphere is very positive - this allows for great rapport between professors and students.”

B. A. Hospitality Management, Duty Manager, Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof

Management and leadership qualities for joining the family business
The trainee programme was specifically tailored to my previous knowledge and areas of interest. In my case, I did rotations in the housekeeping, reception, reservation, revenue management and controlling departments. Of course, at first I learned the basics. However, depending on the department's structure, I often took on more and more responsibility, including management responsibilities. After completing the trainee programme, my work at Steigenberger continued as Duty Manager at Frankfurter Hof. Starting this year, I am also part of the Young Potential Programme of Steigenberger and Deutsche Hospitality. Through a series of seminars on management and leadership, I can acquire a solid foundation of leadership skills and prepare myself for management responsibilities.
And of course I have the long-term goal in mind of becoming the director of a hotel. Since I come from an hotelier family, I have the option of joining our family business. Switching to other areas, such as hotel management consulting or project development, is also interesting to me.

Studying at IUBH: Career-relevant knowledge, friends for life and a solid network
In my day-to-day business, the hotel-specific courses from my studies at IUBH, such as Rooms Division Management, are of great help to me because I have to deal with key performance indicators (KPIs) on a daily basis. In addition, of course, the entire degree programme helps me to better understand and evaluate what I experience every day from a management perspective. Looking back, I can say that the IUBH community and the time spent together with fellow students was absolutely unique. Many of the friendships I made while studying have become friends for life and I would not want to be without them. Due to the strong focus on hotels and tourism, students have the opportunity to build up a network that they can fall back on in many situations. This is very valuable. The learning atmosphere is also very positive thanks to small classes. This allows for great rapport between professors and students.
What I can recommend to people starting their career is to build up a healthy sense of self-confidence and do not to sell yourself below your worth. Above all, it is important to look at potential positions early on in order to meet the application deadlines. This is important for a seamless transition from student life to professional life.
