How Supply Chain Management in Health Care Services Works in Practice

In the field of international health care management, IUBH Campus Studies offers a degree programme with a focus on health care supply chain management. During various excursions, master’s degree students were able to see how acquired theoretical knowledge is actually applied in practice.

The IUBH students with a concentration in supply chain management gained detailed insights into three different health care service providers who specialise in aging, an important issue of the future.

At their first stop, the students learned about the structure and process organisation of inpatient care and assisted living at Kursana Villa Bonn. This is one of 116 German-wide locations of a leading private service provider of elderly care.

Rehabilitation services play an important part in the supply chain of care for elderly patients. The goal of occupational therapy and interdisciplinary treatment is to enable a return to the familiar home environment or to avoid the need for nursing care. At the Kaiser-Karl Klinik in Bonn, the IUBH students reinforced their knowledge about organisational processes with practical examples. This clinic belongs to the publicly listed company Eifelhöhen-Klinik AG, which operates several facilities for outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation, geriatric care and outpatient medical care.

The excursion series, organised for the 2018 summer semester by Prof Dr Mümtaz Köksal – Programme Director of the Health Care Management Department – ended with a visit to Rheinische Compounding. This facility belongs to New Compounding Pharma, a national network specialising in the manufacture of sterile patient-specific pharmaceuticals such as cytostatics and antibodies, as well as supportive and parenteral nutritional solutions.

During the tours of the different facilities, managing directors and sales directors were available to talk to the IUBH health care students and gave helpful tips, recommendations and information about internships, master’s theses and various career entry programmes.
